One of the steps I had to go through in the lead up to our wedding is realising that it’s not just mine. I keep saying “my wedding”, and “I’m getting married”, and “my big day”. But it’s ours. Our wedding, our big day and our decisions. Apparently. So one of our discussions went a little like this…
Doug says, “What colour are you thinking for the bridesmaids?”
After hours of pouring over the internet and years of wedding magazines I’ve decided, “Black.”
Doug says, “That’s cool.”
Me? Chuffed. We don’t agree on much on the best of days so this seems like an effortless win (I was going to say easy win, but nothing’s ever easy). And then he says, “Just make sure they’re long dresses.”
Crap. I’d pictured in my mind this one shouldered, bubble hemmed kind of sparkly black knee length dress. I saw a photo of it on Ebay or one of those sites and I fell in love. “Are you sure they have to be long?”
June in Adelaide is a wee bit chilly but I’m the bride and my knees won’t be cold but then he says, “Yep, I want them long.”
Sure thing. So back to the drawing board and I come up with these beautiful goddess style dresses in black that would suit all three of my beautiful bridesmaids. I buy them on the spot from a bride-to-be who is on her third set of dresses because she keeps changing her mind. Anyway, I got them for a bargain and I really liked them. Right away – at nine o’clock at night – I race around to one of my bridesmaid’s houses and she loves them too.
This is where the nothing easy part comes in. The next day I show Doug and he shakes his head. “I don’t like them.”
And because we have a diplomatic relationship where we both make the decisions and we love each other to the end of time, I say, “Too bad. You don’t have to wear it.”
I still have those dresses and my bridesmaids and my mum (because I need her opinion too) love them. One decision out of the way, only nineteen million, nine hundred thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine more decisions to make. See, it’s easy.
So tell me what colour scheme you went for and how much say did your man have in your big day?
(You can leave a comment. I don’t bite. Much…)
